Frequently Asked Questions
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas can no longer produce insulin or when the body cannot properly use the insulin it produces.
When insulin is not produced or used effectively, glucose levels in the blood rise (known as hyperglycemia). In the long term, high glucose levels are associated with damage to the body and malfunction of various organs and tissues.
Damage to the optic nerve, which results in loss of visual field, is the cause of the chronic, progressive eye illness known as glaucoma.
Optic nerve damage from glaucoma affects your eye. It often occurs when fluid accumulates and the pressure inside the eye rises.
The pancreas produces the hormone insulin, which functions as a key to allow glucose from food to enter the body’s cells where it may be used to make energy. All foods containing carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the blood. Insulin facilitates the uptake of glucose by cells.
The INS gene in humans encodes insulin, a peptide hormone generated by beta cells of the pancreatic islets.
Retina is the inner most layer of the eye ball which contains the system of absorbing light and producing light stimuli which then converges on the optic nerve to be transmitted to the brain. Retina is a highly metabolically active tissue consuming a large amount of Oxygen. So it has a rich vascular supply in health.
In diabetes the long term exposure to high blood sugar damages the retinal capillaries. The inner layer of the capillaries, i.e the basement membrane becomes thickened leading to blockade. READ MORE
