Contributors for Vision 2020 Programme Sri Lanka
This is a global initiative planned for the elimination of avoidable blindness by the year 2020 as a collaborative effort of WHO and IAPB (International Agency for Prevention of Blindness)
Launched in 1999 and endorsed by member governments of WHO, it has been captioned Vision 2020 – RIGHT TO SIGHT – intending to raise awareness, mobilizing resources and developing partnerships among government and non-governmental bodies involved in eye care.
Sri Lanka became signatory for Vision 2020 in year 2000. The national programme for prevention and control of blindness was finalized in 2006 in line with Vision 2020 priorities, disease control, human resource development, infrastructure and equipment supply and management structure and governance. The planning is hosted by the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka. The activities are coordinated by Vision 2020 national Focal point, National Coordinator the five focal points and sub focal points with the support and leadership by the Ministry of Health.
The project of Improving Eye Care for Children and Diabetic Patients-the program under which this website is established -is funded by the Christoffel Blinden Mission, while other projects of Vision 2020 are supported by a variety of Local and International Non-Governmental Organizations.
All members of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka contribute to vision 2020 activities. Also, a separate staff for this project has been employed in a unit placed at National Eye Hospital.
