The Global Initiative: Launch of Vision 2020
VISION 2020 is the global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, launched jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) with an international membership of NGOs, professional associations, eye care institutions and corporations. VISION 2020 member organizations are working together to eliminate avoidable blindness, to give everyone in the world the Right to Sight .

This project aims to improve the outcome of eye diseases caused by diabetes in Sri Lanka by involving people in the stress free environment of their own homes. College of Ophthalmologist, Ministry of Health and Christoffel Blinden Mission has joined hands to give you the most accurate information. Our aim is to educate people to maintain their eye health by following the relevant steps the moment a diagnosis of Diabetes is made.

Our Mission
VISION 2020 Sri Lanka
To eliminate the main causes of avoidable blindness by the year 2020 by facilitating the planning,development and implementation of sustainable national eye care programmes based on the three core strategies of disease control, human resource development and infrastructure and technology, incorporating the principles of primary health care. This will be achieved by mobilising the will and passion for action throu advocacy and by mobilising resources.
From the outset, it has been clear that the goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by the year 2020will best be achieved by integrating an equitable, sustainable, comprehensive eye-care system intoevery national health system. The VISION 2020 initiative is intended to strengthen national health-care systems and facilitate national capacity-building.
History of Vision2020 Project
Sri Lanka became signatory for Vision 2020 in year 2000. The national programme for prevention and control of blindness was finalized in 2006 in line with Vision 2020 priorities, disease control, human resource development, infrastructure and equipment supply and management structure and governance. The planning is hosted by the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka, the work is coordinated by Vision 2020 Secretariat with the support and leadership by government, the Ministry of Health.
Key priority blinding diseases were taken as Cataract, Childhood Blindness, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Refractive Errors and Low Vision and there is integration of Primary Eye Care through existing primary health care system.
Christoffel-Blindenmission is an international non-governmental organization supporting eye care programmes in Sri Lanka since 1976. Considering the current situation of childhood blindness and blindness due to diabetes, we have developed a 3 year action plan for inclusion eye health for children & diabetic patients with the support from CBM. 5 districts are selected for the stage 1, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Badulla, Kurunegala & Galle. Main components are screening of all school children with and without disability and provision of spectacles for children with refractive errors and screening of all diabetes.

CBM Global Disability Inclusion
CBM has been working in Sri Lanka since 1976, with local NGOs and partners of government agencies, delivering services that improve the health, education, and livelihoods of persons with disabilities and at risk of being disabled. As of 2022, Sri Lanka program is implementing in 14 districts with 10 partner organizations.
